A thousand apologies. We Uisteach are a bit foggy about Lewis sometimes. And probably someone will now come on the site to correct my spelling of Uisteach

I really have to point out that Great Bernera is not a peninsula, but a distinct island off Lewis! The people of Bernera refer to Lewis as "Tir Mor" [Mainland], and some were not at all happy in the 1950s to have a bridge built to that mainland.

Thank you Gerald. I think George was wondering how peat could grow up around something that was already sitting quite high up. Thanks for dropping by, you have fantastic knowledge, perhaps you could come and speak to our society?

Hello
I need to correct you - and George - about the peat growth around the Callanish Stones. They did not 'sink down' - the peat grew up around them over the centuries (even on a hilltop!).
In October 1858, workmen under the direction of the local landowner stripped away no less than five feet depth of peat from around the stones of the circle.
If you look at the cover of my book
(at http://home.clara.net/gponting/page34.html)
you will see a drawing which was made a few years later. The 'tide marks' of the removed peat are clearly seen.
My best wishes to you on Uist
Gerald Ponting

Hi Indri, nice to hear from you. I'm going to check out your blog and pics. It's really comforting to know you've managed to get over your fear of spiders. I'll keep working on mine, though I've a long way to go.

Spiders.. It took years for me to turn my phobia into curiosity.. I used to feel my tummy turns upside down as cold sweat running down my back and my arms and legs just went numb.. And the spider might be just the size of our fingernail..
I asked my sister to accompany me to the 'Spider Exhibition' that was held for the week at the Science Works Museum. As you can imagine, I entered the exhibition with cold sweat, shaking and feeling dizzy. Then one of the guides started explaining, and I started to forget the fact that I was surrounded by the eight-legged creatures.
Now, at least once a year, there will be a large female garden spider sitting in her web, somewhere in the front yard, while throughout the year, male spiders will be found scuttling inside the house. They can get as big as a dinner plate, and their bites are hurtful because of their giant fangs, but they are not venomous.
Whenever I see them, I spend some time taking photos and writing blogs about them. It helps reduce my phobia. You're most welcome to read my posts about the spiders in my blog, under the label 'Spiders', who knows, it might help reduce your fear too.. ;-)

Glad you bothered to find me again, Pseu, thanks! Hmmm. Please give me some clues about how I can learn to love spiders as much as you, particularly those huge ones.....
